{"id":3841,"date":"2016-04-07T09:15:11","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T13:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/blog\/?p=3841"},"modified":"2017-05-04T12:16:28","modified_gmt":"2017-05-04T16:16:28","slug":"ibm-hot-swap-and-simple-swap-whats-the-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/blog\/ibm-hot-swap-and-simple-swap-whats-the-difference\/3841","title":{"rendered":"IBM Hot-Swap and Simple-Swap: What&#8217;s The Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is the difference between Hot-Swap and Simple-Swap?<\/h2>\n<p>Here is an example of some IBM drives with these two variations:<\/p>\n<p>IBM 600GB 10,000 RPM SAS 2.5-inch Gen2 Hot-Swap hybrid Hard drive (G2<em>HS Hot Swap<\/em>) &#8211; Part numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/00AD102.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">00AD102 <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/00AD103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">00AD103<\/a><br \/>\nIBM 600GB 10,000 RPM SAS 2.5-inch Gen2 Hot-Swap hybrid Hard drive (G2<em>SS Simple Swap<\/em>) &#8211; Part numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/00AD107.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">00AD107 <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximummidrange.com\/00AD108.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">00AD108<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Per Lenovo, &#8220;Simple Swap hard drives are not compatible in a hot swap backplane even though they seem to fit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What that means is the G2HS hot-swap uses an SATA connector for power while the G2SS simple-swap uses a 4 pin molex for power.<\/p>\n<p>Also, simple-swap are not hot-swappable (system must be powered down to change them out).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/knowledgecenter\/STAV45\/com.ibm.sonas.doc\/bb1gt_t_remsimpleswap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/knowledgecenter\/STAV45\/com.ibm.sonas.doc\/bb1gt_t_remsimpleswap.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>HP has a similar confusing naming convention, but they use &#8220;hot-swap and wired&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hope this helps!<\/p>\n<p>Have more questions?
