Our previous Storwize article raised a few questions. Here are the answers.
IBM Storwize V3700 vs V7000 – what’s the difference?
In a word: Capacity… but how much?
The Storwize V3700 scales up to 120 2.5-inch disk drives or 60 3.5-inch disk drives with four expansion enclosures plus the original dual control enclosure.
That makes for a maximum of 180TB when using the 60 3.5 inch 3TB drives in the Storwize V3700 LFF control and expansion enclosures.
Or, a maximum of 120TB when using the 120 2.5 inch 1TB drives in the Storwize V3700 SFF control and expansion enclosures.
(Drives of the same size can be mixed within an enclosure, so you can start smaller and build out as needed.)
The Storwize V7000 scales out with essentially the same drives but can support nine expansion enclosures per dual control enclosure which can then be clustered into a group of four.
Let’s do the math:
V3700 LFF System:
12 disks x 3TB each = 36TB
36TB x 5 enclosures = 180TB
V3700 SFF System:
24 disks x 1TB each = 24TB
24 x 5 enclosures = 120TB
V7000 System
12 disks x 3TB each = 36TB
36 x 10 enclosures = 360TB
24 disks x 1TB each = 24TB
24 x 10 enclosures = 240TB
Which can then be clustered out to four systems:
360TB x 4 = 1,400TB or 1.4PB (!)
(For hard drive comparisons, check the table at the bottom of this article )
What else is different?
