What is Entry-Level Storage and why are we asking this question?
What is Entry-Level Storage?
On Friday, August 15th, IDC issued a press release with the title “Worldwide Personal & Entry Level Storage Market Sees Moderate Shipment Growth in the Second Quarter of 2014…”
An interesting statistic in the report that applies to our market was this:
“The entry-level market continued to see strong growth in the higher bay devices (5, 6, 8, and 12 bays), which saw units shipped grow by 22.6% year over year.”
The IDC post clarifies in its Notes section that: “IDC defines […] Entry-Level Storage as having 3-12 bays.”
Why do we care about the definition?
The 12 bay enclosures are where we are seeing the most growth here at Maximum Midrange. An example of that would be the Storwize 3700 2072-L2C Dual Control Enclosure.
The 3700 hits the bigger end of what entry-level storage is, as it offers a minimum of 12 bays and a maximum of 24 bays (per enclosure).
The beauty of it is that even though this system pushes the upper size limit of entry-level storage, it easily fits into the limit budget-wise as refurbished systems become available.
This allows the end-user to often get twice the storage density at the same price as a new system.
It’s like entry-level x 2 at original budget costs.
This applies to all of the storage systems we offer: EMC, NetApp, IBM, HP, Exagrid.
Conclusion
The IDC report shows the 22.6% increase in 5-12 bay storage sales. We at Maximum Midrange can see it in our sales numbers and inventory.
What we see on top of that, is the extra storage that can be purchased for the same amount of money.
Want to see it for yourself?
Give us a budget to work with and what you were expecting for storage density, and we will do our best to get you more storage for the same amount of money.
It’s a great way to make the bean-counters happy! (Or at least get them off your back.)
