More battery stuff…
See yesterday’s battery news here: https://www.maximummidrange.com/blog/battery-stuff-1-cache-batteries-39r6520-and-69y2926/3725
Stock on these DS4100/DS4300 controller cache batteries varies with the season, it seems, so pricing changes along with it.
We have had a few questions on the 24P8062 batteries this week, so here is how it lays out.
This is the controller:

and it does include a battery.
These are just the replacement batteries:

And to make it just a bit more confusing, this is also known as the:
Sun StorEdge 6130 RAID Controller Battery – PN: 370-6931
SUN Oracle Part Number 006-1086769.
What is the purpose of the 24P8062 cache batteries and cache batteries in general?
The controller that the battery is in caches its write data in its own RAM. That speeds things up, but if the power fails, then your OS thinks the data has been written when it has not which leads to missing data or corruption.
The battery enables the system to finish the writing of the data from the RAM after power has failed.
A UPS battery backup system does the same thing, so this cache battery is insurance on top of that. We like to think of the cache battery as the first line of defense and the UPS second.
Confused? We’d love to help!
