Optimize Your Data Center Costs: Cloud vs In-house Computing - The Maximum Midrange Blog

Very few of our clients now are either 100% in house data center / 100% in the cloud – How Maximum Midrange can help

The Cloud is an incredible option for individuals and businesses large and small.  Every day as consumers we seamlessly interact with it for our personal email, photo sharing, movie streaming, mapping services etc.  All of this what seems free, is paid for mainly by delivering advertising to our mobile devices and desktops.

In the business world, the cloud works differently.  It is a subscription based service.  Putting your multi million line database in the cloud is not a free solution.  It will cost you.  Every month.  And really, that is how it should be.  Nothing is free of course.

Very few of our clients now are either 100% in house data center / 100% in the cloud – it is almost always a mix.  What we try to do is offer economical hardware based solutions when a client is considering cloud vs in house.  If you read our blog, you know we like to write about the IBM 8234-EMA machine, but there is a good reason.  With an initial purchase price of approximately $7,500 – a client would receive a factory sealed IBM server – 16 way 3.6Ghz machine, configurable with up to 384Gb RAM and up to 5.4Tb of disk space.  OS is your preference between AIX and your preferred version of Linux.  $7,500 – that part is done and paid for.  Hardware maintenance on this machine (if that is selected) is approximately $4,800 annually for the base model.  Your recurring cost is then $400 per month.  Or you could self-maintain with our lifetime warranty on parts for this machine.  Then the client has to factor in power consumption and the IT staff (which you still have of course managing cloud applications), etc.  Once all the numbers are together, the client can weigh in house computing vs cloud.

Generally speaking, if working on documents in a collaborative process and the sharing of files is at the top of your daily list, then cloud computing is the way to go.
If the security of your data is your main concern, or if you are a small business with a smaller IT budget, then leaning to the local side would work for you.
But you (just like us here at Maximum Midrange) will probably have that mix of local / cloud and we can help you determine what in-house storage and networking gear will suit you best.
